Are floor fans good for cooling?

We are all used to tower, pedestal, desk, and standing fans for cooling our rooms but have you ever considered getting a floor fan? Technically speaking, no fans cool the room but rather cools people inside the room by helping in the evaporation of moisture from their body surface.

This information begs the question, why indeed should one go for a floor plan instead of, say a ceiling fan? Well, the merit of all types of fans cannot be judged without taking into consideration the setting. Yes, the kind of space you are getting the fan for obviously determines the kind of fan it needs.

For example, if the room in question is situated on the top floor of a building and under direct sunlight, then getting a ceiling fan will only heat up the room more because the air it will be distributing is already hot. In such a room, a floor fan will work best in keeping the room breezy and cool. But one thing is clear you don’t need a noisy fan, everything else is just strategic.

Let us go through why floor fans are good enough for cooling as well as why not:

The flow of Concentrated Cool Air

Floor fans are usually small in size and thus cannot distribute air throughout an entire room or space but if you wish to get cool air in one concentrated spot then a floor fan is the best for you.

You will be able to enjoy a steady stream of cool air with floor fans and also position the fan in whichever direction you want.

This kind of fan is best for workshops or places where people do intensive work in their individual assigned spaces. The worker can just position the floor fan to face them and work away on the floor peacefully while enjoying the continuous cool air. A floor fan also cools much faster than a ceiling fan or a standing fan so that’s an added bonus for sure!

No Heating inside the Fan

One thing you may not know about ceiling fans is that the body of the fan itself generates heat and after a while, this heat is distributed with the air in the room. This happens because ceiling fans run on electric motors which in turn are powered by electricity.

Thus electricity is converted into mechanical energy and this process generates heat. However, this is not a possibility in floor fans because even though heat energy is generated, it is so in very small amounts owing to the smaller body of the fan.

This is why floor fans can guarantee longer durations of constant cool air as there is negligible heating inside its body.

Portable

This is not directly related to cooling but portability is one of the main reasons why floor fans are popular. Desk fans and pedestal fans cannot cover all areas of a room no matter how they are placed. Either their oscillation limit stops them or they cannot be lowered below a certain limit even though they are portable.

This is why floor fans come in. They are smaller in structure and can be used to supply cool air to whichever corner of the room needs it. In a way, floor fans really do reach all corners which even a ceiling fan cannot.

Easy to Clean

Floor fans can last you a long time and this is partly also due to the fact that it is easier to clean than ceiling fans or pedestal fans especially when you have no window in your bedroom.

Dust accumulated on the bodies of machines affects their efficiency and speed and can even damage the motor. But because larger fans are not easily accessible, one may often have to wait for assistance before cleaning them and the time between two cleans becomes long.

But for floor fans, which can be placed anywhere and easily handled by anyone, cleaning is not a hassle. This is why it can be assumed that floor fans do not easily accumulate dust both because they can be easily cleaned but also because of their small body.

Now that we have covered the pros of a floor fan, let us have a brief look at the cons:

Durability

It is no secret that ceiling fans are more durable and sturdy than floor fans. If you are to compare a ceiling fan and a ceiling fan wihtin the same price range, then the latter will of course be more durable than the former.

You may get a food fan for a cheap price but with continuous usage, it will suffer repeated breakdowns and will need repairs. This might end up costing you much more than the original purpose of the fan.

Noise

Floor fans, although good for cooling, make a lot of noise. This noise is usually higher than can be expected from a fan and definitely more than what a ceiling fan makes.

It can be distracting if you are trying to work or focus on something or just trying to sleep. Floor fans tend to make more noise as they get older and dirtier.

This is why the number one way to make floor fan quieter is to keep it squeaky clean at all times.

Final Thoughts

Floor fans become a practical choice for cooling only if you wish for a concentrated supply of air in a small room or area. Otherwise, choosing a floor fan over a ceiling fan is not worth it. No matter what, ceiling fans are the clear winner in every category.

That said, floor fans are cheaper, easier to maintain, and also portable. They also don’t need to be installed by a professional as the parts can be easily assembled and all you have to do is plug them in and use them.

So, to answer the original question, yes flood fans are indeed good for cooling but only after the practical aspects have been considered.
