Pancake Day - Shrove Tuesday - is coming up, and we have some great ideas for using the occasion to boost your family’s fruit and veg intake while having fun in the kitchen together.*
Any of the below tips will give your celebrations a nutritional kick while also upping the all-important deliciousness factor.
Hearty Wholemeal
Choosing wholemeal flour instead of the traditional white flour will give your pancakes more fibre and make them more filling, keeping everyone fuller for longer – and perhaps making it more difficult to eat too many!
Sugar and spice
Adding cinnamon into your batter mix gives a lovely, warming flavour and reduces the need for quite so much sugar or syrup on top. Serve with baked apples and a little bit of yogurt.
A savoury twist
Bulk up your batter and add some veg. We have a fantastic recipe for savoury American pancakes that has been created for us by The Children’s Food Trust. Add soup or a salad and you have a whole meal.
Get fruity
Fruit makes a great topping for pancakes, but it’s perhaps even more delicious cooked into the pancakes themselves. You could try adding blueberries to your batter, American-style, or get adventurous and experiment. Banana and pineapple work well, but we’d love to hear if you have success with other fruits – we have a sneaking suspicion that raspberries might be a winner.
